INTRODICTION
Kisongo Academic College is a secondary school based at Kisongo village,a original Maasai VillageVillage at about 1.2 km along Lekamba road. Kisongo village, in turn, lies within an approximate distance of about 14km from Arusha town, along Dodoma Road, the high way to the Northern Tanzania National Parks of Serengeti, Lake Manyara Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Tarangire National Park in Arusha region,Tanzania. Kisongo Academic College was established in 2003 while responding to the country’s needs for skilled manpower in various sectors and to implement poverty reduction programs and achieve the overall sustainable economic development, of the country.The main trust in the effort to establish Kisongo Academic College was premised in being able to provide a comprehensive training package that integrates formal education with informal education (Vocational training), courses which are provided by Both departments of secondary education and department of Vocational Education in the ministry of education and vocational training.
Kisongo Academic College is an unbiased secondary school in terms of gender, ethnicity, race, nationality etc. Hence, Kisongo Academic College has managed to create partnerships inside and outside the country with the local communities; local government administrations, churches, Government agencies and other actors in the private sector; as a way of building an institution that caters for the career needs and aspirations of both boys and girls in a sustainable way in the increasingly stiff, competitive job market.
To achieve this, it is therefore necessary to:
To consolidate and broaden the scope of baseline ideas, knowledge, skills and principles acquired and developed at the primary education level,
- To enhance further development and appreciation of national unity, identity and ethic, personal integrity, respect for and readiness to work, human rights, cultural and moral values, customs, traditions and civic responsibilities and obligations;
- To promote the development of competency in linguistic ability and effective use of communication skills in Kiswahili and in at least one/two foreign languages;
- To provide opportunities for the acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding in prescribed or selected fields of study;
- To prepare students for tertiary and higher education, vocational, technical and professional training;
- To inculcate a sense and ability for self-study, self-confidence and self- advancement in new frontiers of science and technology,as well as academic, occupational knowledge, and skills;
- And to: Produce proficient and professional technology technicians in either:
Ř Electrical and rural electrification technology
· Solar energy
· Wind energy
· Pico hydro power
Ř Basic computer skills and information technology.
On the other hand, the secondary education that KAC offers
are divided in two levels and compulsory languages course:
Ordinary level (O-level), of four years post primary education. The cycle follows both a core or common national curriculum and specialized optional subjects at the end of which students sit for nationally set examinations.
Advanced level (“A” level) which is two years post “O” level. The cycle follows a national curriculum and examinations. It is divided between Science and Arts streams. It prepares students for tertiary and higher education as well as entry into the world of work.
